Profile of the BOSU Ball, invented in 1999 by David Weck. (See video here.)
I. What is it?
It’s called a “BOSU Ball” (pronounced Bo-Sue). Apparently it is short for “Both Sides Up” because you can use it with either side up.
When was it invented? 1999
Who invented it? David Weck
What else have they invented? Quick Hands Bola Trainer
Who endorsed it? No one famous that I know of, though many famous athletes have gone on record as using it, including Lance Armstrong and some other people not as famous as Lance Armstrong.
Other Names: Blue half ball, half stability ball, the thing in the corner that crazy dude uses to do pushups.

Why should you use it? Number one reason: balance training. The best part of using a BOSU ball is to gain a sense of balance. Being on an unstable surface while doing other typical exercises like a shoulder press or biceps ...

This weekend I was dragged to an Herbalife meeting. The girl in charge had this story to tell:
“I was over weight, depressed, and eating chocolate like it was nobody’s business. I wasn’t working out, and I slept a lot. BLAH BLAH BLAH. Then I starting taking these supplements and shakes. I started working out at least an hour a day and I am now on a roller derby team. I ditched the daily visit to Sees Candy and started eating right. I have lost 30 pounds in 6 months-all because of Herbalife!”
Did you catch that? All because of Herbalife? Really? So the change in diet and exercise and no longer eating Sees Candy every night wasn’t the reason for weight loss? My Mom shares Nutrilite with people and they have supplements and shakes, but eating that stuff without a proper diet and exercise will only shrink your wallet! Even she will ...

Do you have a Biggest Loser Competition at work you would love to win? Workplace team competitions are very common these days. To win a competition, having a coach is the number one way to improve your chances of smashing the opposition. Fitness means something different to everyone. In working with your coach individually, you can come together as a group with goals specific for you but have a common focus and be able to support each other.

Initial 30 minute private consult
Follow up email with challenges and goals specific to you
Nutritional analysis and meal planning
Fitness plan creation
Follow up 30 minute call every two weeks
Email communication

When working in a group, you are more likely to stick with it because of the accountability you create. Its important to have a goal, but without a plan and a few different ways to achieve that plan your goal turns into a distant dream. With a coach, you ...

Running is great for weight loss. Add in some resistance training, some solid nutrition, and you will drop a few dress sizes before you can say Boston Marathon. Of course, you don’t have to run that race to lose weight, but hitting the open road with nothing but some sneakers and your favorite tunes is a very inexpensive, productive way to start up a fitness routine.
Don’t worry if you can’t run very far. Start with running a block. That is what my bride did. In May of this past year, she could barely run to the end of the block. Six months later, she crossed the finish line of her first marathon. (You can visit her journey blog here)
I do a lot of running, too. She loves the open road and I love a great trail run. We live in the hills of San ...

There is a book called Training Camp written by my mentor and friend, Jon Gordon. The story is about a college football player and his journey to the NFL. During his second preseason game, he returns a kick for a TD, turning his ankle on the way. This is bad news for someone trying to earn a job as a running back.
This setback was turned into an amazing moment because he was FORCED to focus on his mind and SLOW DOWN so he could fully heal.
Welcome to your time. The time you would normally run, study. Create AMAZING recipes for your family. Become a fully nourished person. Good luck to you and thank you for commenting on my blog!

Is it me, or is Dr. Phil a pretty big guy? I just finished reading “The Ultimate Weight Solution: The 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom” this morning. Nothing new that hasn’t been screamed before. Phrases like “food is a drug,” “Pay attention at how you feel when you eat,” and “don’t eat processed foods” kept the book at par with all the other celeb-turned-nutritionist’s books. It seems like everyone has a weight plan and the “secret” to weight loss.
How many diet plans have you tried in the last 5 years? I have read about or tried every “diet plan” I can get my hands on (and driven my bride crazy with the random grocery lists I bring with us to the store). Its not that I am trying to lose weight-on the contrary, I am very happy at the weight I am at. The reason I put myself through ...

Did you watch it? If you missed it, you missed a great show. Celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels travels to Wilmington, Mass., where she meets a father who underwent an unsuccessful gastric bypass surgery and a mother who is scheduled to undergo the procedure before their daughter’s wedding.
The show starts with some pretty amazing sound bites. Here are a few:

“I am afraid of exercise”
“2/3 of American adults are overweight”
“Obesity costs us over $150 billion a year”

“I don’t want to be fat anymore.
“My goal is to be a better dad to you.”

…and my favorite, from Jillian herself, “Why are you going to choose failure when success is an option?”

What would you suggest as a good starting point for someone who is just starting to implement a fitness program after leading a pretty sedentary lifestyle?
Actually, that is a loaded question. The normal response is “Just get started. Go to a gym and get your body moving.” Of course, that is not enough and most people need guidance. Hiring a trainer is a great start. Training is expensive but so are the diseases developed from obesity; so really its pay now or pay later. I have quite a few clients I see once a week or every other week to help them spice up their own workout routine but others need guidance more often in the beginning, so they come in ...

Hey Mom!
This is an interview I did with Kim Burly, a Fresno native doing a blog series titled “31 Days of Fresno: Who to know in the No.”
It is a little long so I have broken it up into 2 parts. Thank you, Kim!
The article, part 1:
Its no secret that I really freakin’ love working out. I also like to comb teh internets for fitness blogs and tips for staying motivated to keep a healthy lifestyle. That’s how I found out about Trainer James- imagine my excitement when I discovered that he was a Fresnan to boot! (And we share the same alma mater. Sweet!)
This guy is a powerhouse. He blogs, he offers personal training, he challenges people on his Facebook- he’s practically omnipresent with his constant nudging to “Sweat It Out”.
This is exactly why I wanted him to be my first “Folks to know in the ‘No” interviewee. So without further ado, I bring ...

There is this guy, Jon Gordon, I just love! I see him as a mentor. If you are not familiar with his work, I promise it is worth your time. His style of writing takes boring, repeated bulleted leadership principles and turns them into AMAZING stories. I highly recommend him. My favorite book is Training Camp, a story about an NFL rookie who is forced to face his fears on his path to greatness. Along the way, he learns a valuable lesson from a coach who sees a potential in the rookie to be great.

Studies have shown that eating eggs, yogurt, and whole-grain cereal can give your body a little fat-burning advantage. How, you ask? The protein in eggs probably helps control appetite, so people eat less and feel more full. Calcium and other helpful compounds in yogurt may help stop fat storage and turn up fat burn. And as for whole grain cereals a box of Cheerios (my favorite) can help control blood sugar and lower blood pressure, and they can even reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers.

Target Heart Rates
AHA Recommendation
Health professionals know the importance of proper pacing during exercise. To receive the benefits of physical activity, it’s important not to tire too quickly. Pacing yourself is especially important if you’ve been inactive.
Target heart rates let you measure your initial fitness level and monitor your progress in a fitness program. This approach requires measuring your pulse periodically as you exercise and staying within 50 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate. This range is called your target heart rate.
What is an alternative to target heart rates?
Some people can’t measure their pulse or don’t want to take their pulse when exercising. If this is true for you, try using a “conversational pace” to monitor your efforts during moderate activities like walking. If you can talk and walk at the same time, you aren’t working too hard. If you can sing and maintain your level of effort, you’re ...
