The perpetuation of bogus myths in the health and wellness industry are why I will always have a job as a personal trainer. The most notable (and laughable) is the idea that muscle weighs more than fat. You will notice it is not in my top 5 myths simply because the laws of the universe I live in. 5 pounds of muscle are equal to 5 pounds of fat. See? Next time someone says that, punch them in the face then defriend them on Facebook. Or, if that is too violent for you, politley explain to them that 5 pounds equals 5 pounds, regadless of what it is, and explain to the that muscle takes up less room than fat. (see featured image)
So, other than the great weight debate of muscle vs. fat, here are some other myths I hear people repeat about fitness:
Myth 1: To avoid getting “bulky” I should only use ...

Are you in an abusive relationship with food? Do you give it power over you? Do you allow it to ruin your body?
Have you ever thought of food as a person that can make you feel good or make you feel like crap? For example, one of my favorite comedians, Jim Gaffigan, is famous for his bit on Hot Pockets.
He says, “I have never eaten a Hot Pocket then thought ‘I am really glad I ate that’- it’s more like: ‘I’m gonna die! Did I eat that or rub it on my face? My back hurts…”
It’s the truth though! We are born with all the tools needed to be the best nutritionst in the world! When you have a stomach ache after eating, that is your body telling you either not to eat that or you didn’t listen earlier and now you have eaten too much! When you stand ...

There’s no surprise in the fact that I spend time each and every day talking with people about their goals. After all, as a trainer and performance coach, that’s what I do. Normally, I love this part of my work. I like nothing better than to see my clients, teammates and friends succeed.
You might be wondering, “Where’s Todd going with this?” Well, there’s a problem that I want to take head-on: I’m frustrated with people just TALKING about their goals. Talk, talk, talk. I want action! ACTION is what will set you apart. We’re on a mission and ...

Boil some eggs for quick snacks.
Cut up and store vegetables that are to be added to salads and morning omelet (Amanda and I pre-portion nuts, seeds and raisins into sandwich bags for quick snacks) Also, getting some bundles of leafy greens and cutting them up yourself is way cheaper than buying the prepackaged stuff.

(Re-posted without permission. Just a great post I found on ToddDurkin.com)
Weight loss shows are a hit. Modern society’s insatiable voyeuristic appetite drives millions of viewers to tune in and watch the profoundly overweight, devoid of hope or motivation, endure overly intensive physical and emotional struggles to win a race to the lowest number on the scale. Special diets, celebrity personal trainers, hours of daily rigors, and spectacle-worthy competitions are performed daily under the watchful eye of medical physicians and most importantly, reality show executives. A message of hope is intertwined in these daily tribulations that reads, “If you are overweight and you have access to a personal trainer, psychologist, dietician, gym, equipment and are able to exercise for hours every day for the possibility of a considerable cash prize, you too can turn your life around.”
As complex as the process is depicted in our modern society, maintaining ...

Start a blog, not a stale website. WordPress has been the blog of choice for me. There are many reasons to have a blog instead of a stale website.

Site is constantly being updated with content by you, which helps people find you through internet searches
You can offer free tips on your blog that will help establish your credibility as a coach/trainer
Connect your YouTube page so people can see you in action and/or watch video testimonies of your services

Blogs are smiply the best way to go for service oriented professionals. Stand alone websites pale in comparison to blog in regards to repeat traffic. If you are waiting for someone to stumble upon your website, it won’t happen. There are just too many other trainer/coaches out there hoping for the same thing.

I came home one day from university and I was pooped. I started class at 7am and went non-stop until 5:30pm every Tuesday and Thursday but this particular day I was exhausted because I had 2 exams that day. I remember I kept thinking once I get home, I have one last beer in the fridge and an Its It! ice-cream sandwich waiting to be devoured.
I walked in the door, threw my bag on the table, opened the fridge…no beer. Opened the freezer…no ice cream sandwich. I was calm at first, trying to remember if I had eaten it the day before. I knew I hadn’t, I just knew it. Roommates were gone so I couldn’t ask them…then I walked by the garbage can. Inside, right on top, lay an empty can of beer and an Its It! ice-cream sandwich wrapper. I was livid.
Now, a beer and an ice-cream sandwich ...

I always thought New Years day was a horrible day to start a resolution. The timing is all wrong. The weather is cold and dark and no one wants to go outside. You are sick from an overeating binge that started on Thanksgiving that included office parties, Christmas party and then there is the headache from drinking on New Years Eve. Now you are suppose to create new goals and resolutions? Wrong.
My proposal: I know it has been spring for a few weeks now, but hear me out: First day of spring should be a day of resolutions!
Here is why:
The first day of spring…

Farmers sow their crops.
Plants begin to grow after the long dormancy of winter.
Animals come out of hibernation and being nesting and reproducing.
Birds migrate and start breeding.

All this is going on, ad we are suppose to look back three and a half months to see ...

Contrary to popular belief, fat does not turn into muscle. You have fat cells and muscle fibers. Fat cells get filled with the energy you consume but fail to use, and muscles grow when they are strained beyond their usual capacity.
Another thing I hear often is people say “Muscle weighs more than fat.” Question: Which weighs more, a pound of metal or a pound of feathers?” They both weigh a pound, but the density of the two are very different. Take for example, a mushball (fat) and a baseball (muscle). Both weigh about the same, but the density of the baseball is a lot higher and the mushball is a lot bigger. Also, as an added benefit to having muscle, you burn more calories because muscle requires more energy to function properly, as opposed to fat that uses little or no energy to simply exist.

Certifications:
“What organization should I get certified with?” is a question I get all the time. Between my brother-in-law trainer and myself, I think in 5 years we have been asked twice. The general public is not interested in who you are certified under, only that you know what you are doing and you can deliver results. Get certified to build confidence and knowledge, not to impress people. Trust me, a trainer with 10 certifications is not impressive to anyone but themselves. As a coach, I am currently in Robbins-Madanes Coach Training and I love it. ...

Certifications:
“What company should I get certified with?” is a question I get all the time. Between my brother-in-law trainer and myself, I think in 5 years we have been asked twice. The general public is not interested in who you are certified under, only that you know what you are doing and you can deliver results. Warm up: This one is obvious. However, there are studies that show warming up is not necessary for the body to start a workout. Even if that is true, a warm up gets your mind ready to push the body. After a day of sitting at a desk or a night of “okay” sleep, preparing the mind with a few minutes of gradually heart pumping walking, jogging, or cycling can really get you in the mood.

I see people at the gym all the time doing crunches wrong. There are a few right ways, and many wrong ways to strengthen the abs. Tip: anytime you can do an exercise that allows you to go through the full range of motion for that muscle or mucles group, you are doing well.
